My 86 944 n/a did the same thing, would not turn off until the battery was dead. It turned out to be the fan switch that goes into the radiator. I got it from auto zone for $12.00 and it works great.

I put a new battery in the car and turned it on with out turning over the engine and tried everything that I could. The previous owner just drove the car and those things did not work when he got it...

Ok I just got a 1986 944 that needs some work, the timing belt broke so I was not able to drive the car at all and I will have to fix that first but that the least of my problems I will just rebuild...
