97 M3 with 140K miles was giving a cam position sensor CEL. Turned out the outside cover from the plug to the sensor was soft and flexible but peeling that back the insulation on the wires themselves...

Side note about knock sensor. A neighbor that had a new Ford pick up (4 years ago) kept having a no power issue when pulling his boat. The rattle of the trailer hitch was fooling the knock sensor....
