Try putting a 1N4001 diode in series with the gen lamp lead to stop feed back.
If its installed right the lamp will light when you turn on the key.

Start by pulling out all the fuses and see if the short is still there. If not put the fuses in one at a time till you find the circuit thats causing the problem. Then trouble shoot that circuit.
