Fuel filler lid release?

Went to fill up the '87 911 today and when I pulled the release nob the nob and cable came out in my hand. Is there an alternate release option anywhere?

Low fuel light just came on, maybe 10...

Just did this on my '87. When I took off the front wheel, Boge was etched into the strut just above the rotor. Replaced them with the Bilstein Sport inserts last Saturday.
