More info.

I forgot to mention that I replaced the points with a Pertronix system. The tach was bouncing and reading erratically before and after the swap. The car is a '73S but the pics look like it has a '74...

Thanks all. As a side note, the car also has a flashing "B" red idiot light on the dash and a relay under the hood, (Front), is clicking on and off. It corresponds to the red light going on and off...

Angry Bouncing baby tach!

Has anybody ran into a bouncing tach? The car is a 1973 911. The erratic reading does not correspond to the engine RPM. The coil connection looks perfect, as does the wiring harness in the engine...

Thanks Dennis & Gary. He's getting new tires this weekend since the current ones are weather=checked. We'll see if the tach problem is really gone. I'll look up the Crane unit. I installed a similar...

Well, my last post didn't.
Regapping the points seemed to take care of the tach bounce! He said that it has never run better so thanks to all. Next up, replace the points with a magnetic pickup...

Dang! Wrong again!

Sorry for the confusion. His car is a 1975 "S".
I cleaned up the battery posts and cables. His idea of "perfect" and mine are quite different. I sent him out for a new negative cable and installed...

Thanks Dennis!

Thanks Dennis. I was indeed headed for the battery connections next. The cap & rotor look perfect although I haven't inspected the points closely yet.
I have seen very strange things occur as a...

Problem Update

I found a loose, corroded wire from the distributor terminal to the fan housing. Seems like an odd way to wire the distributor. I cleaned it up and tightened it down. The car ran better and longer...

Thanks to all!

I just wanted to thank everyone. What a great forum. I may have to buy a 911! Perhaps my memory is faulty, it is probably a 911S. I'll check when I go out to work on it this weekend. Why work on your...

'75 SC runs poorly when warmed up

Here I go. My brother-in-law's 1975 911SC starts missing and the tach jumps once it is warmed up and on the road. It appears to have a new cap, rotor, points, wires, ignition box. I'm thinking...
