I believe the e39 used the m62 V8, while the e63 cars (645 and 650) both used the n62, in slightly different forms.

E39 never shared an engine with the 6 series.

Google "BMW N62 coolant pipe", this may turn you off to the V8. Many are being sold once the O rings start to leak.
