I just spent more than the IMS bearing replacement to wrap the front of my new Boxster in clear film. Stone chips are a *****, but they're a hell of a lot less expensive than an engine failure.

18ft-lbs (24 NM)? That's triple the torque spec for valve cover bolts. 8-10 NM should be all that needed if the valve cover mating surface is nice and flat. Paper gaskets and brand new nylock nuts...

Did you reuse the old nylock nuts? If so, that's likely why you're getting drips. If new, go with a pit of permatex sealant as zedsn suggests.
