fan -> 4 3 2 1 -> windshield, Cylinder 1 is the one you're calling 4 :-)

What's the condition of the chain tensioner,...

What's the condition of the chain tensioner, belts etc? If the pump makes noise when car is running and you turn the wheels left and right ; it's a goner.. well not exactly but needs a bit of work.

Was your engine at TDC when you measured the belt? The tension of the timing belt needs to be measured at certain points (by turning engine until marks in clutch and cam sprocket are aligned.

These parts are from my 100tml driven S2. When considering engine rebuild I decided to go for the 'S3' conversion so the S2 parts were left out..

Use good tools! Remember that you need to remove the sprocket from the exhaust cam as it holds the first bridge in place. You need to open these bolts before the bridge gets loose....
