Tensioner Question

In the process of replacing belts, pulleys, and tensioner on '97 318i. After unbolting the idler tensioner pulley, it appears that I need to unbolt the alternator to remove this part. Is this right?

I could not locate the instrument ground. I read something where there could be a problem with the ground splice for the fuel and speed sensor?? This makes sense since it is just the fuel gauge...
