Shifter Boot Removal G50

Hi is there a way to remove the leather boot without disassembly or removal of the center console? I’m having a metal-rubbing which sounds like it’s coming from the top of the shifter assembly....

I just had this issue with my '87. Turned out the ECU was burnt and water corroded. Had to have it rebuilt by the place in Florida. Not cheap but back on the road!
