Oh yeah, fluid should be changed every 2 years, irrespective of mileage. {That's what is called for in the BMW service schedule, so I just use it for my other cars, too.}

fixed it

replacing the electrical switch with the new one from PP did the trick, must be the one I got from them a couple of years ago was a bit out of spec. no extra bits and pieces needed, now all works...
