993's are air cooled and come in N/A and twin...

993's are air cooled and come in N/A and twin turbo configurations as well as widebodies and AWD. The turbo is AWD. 996's are water cooled and also come in the configurations as the 993. I personally...

I would have the crank checked for any cracking...

I would have the crank checked for any cracking with a fluorescent magnetic particle test, then have it reworked at a reputible machine shop. Be sure it has been demagnetized before reinstalling....
