Front drive half shafts sheared 997.1
Porsche 997 4S Tiptronic 2006 model with VF Supercharger. (South Africa)
Decided to run the car on a dyno. Four wheel drive Dyno was available. Question: Can we run it directly on the dyno or is it required to remove drive shaft to the front differential ? Answer: No not required. Dyno run was started running slowly and a flap-flap noise like a disc touching dust cover was heard from the front. At this stage all wheels were turning. The speed was increased and the front wheels stopped turning and flap-flap noise also dissappered. Answer: This was a Porsche "Standard Safety Feature" and not to worry about. Sequal: There was a vibration above 105 mph. Wheels were balanced at a Porsche dealer made little difference. I changed the engine oil including gearbox and differentials 1600 miles later and observed the front drive half shafts were both sheared as it exits the inside CV joints at the front differential. No damage could be observed from the outside and i judged myself extremely lucky.. The supplier of the Dyno, when contacted advised strongly against running a car with viscous coupling to the front differential on a 4 wheel drive dyno. New side shafts have arrived and and I will replace it within the next week. Would highly appreciate comments on this unfortunate experience as well as possible precautionary measures. |

VF supercharger was fitted 30,000 miles ago and Tiptronic gearbox makes shock free gear changes.
Maybe IMS bearing replacement should be considered. Anybody had their drive axles sheared ? |
