Hello, I recently purchased a 2001 - 996 C4 with 43K miles on it. The car is in pristine condition but there is a little play in the steering wheel (right to left). I had taken it to a local Independent Porsche shop and they diagnosed the problem was with the steering shaft. I bought a complete replacement assy. and now have the car on a lift. It appears that the problem is the top u joint (closest to the steering wheel). I've checked in the Bentley manual and various forums but I cannot find any reference as to how to remove / replace the shaft. Does the rack need to be removed or just moved? Any coaching would be greatly appreciated.

I was able to R&R the steering shaft assy. From underneath the car by unbolting the steering rack and moving it towards the drivers side. Not easy but doable.
