Engine Upgrade

New to the forum, so bare with me; I just acquired a '99 911 with a blown engine (3.4L) and was curious to know if it is possible to replace it with a 3.6L without much or any alterations?

Read this to get a idea of what is involved for different year engines :

I have a rebuilt 2001 engine that is 3.6 litre displacement and other upgrades that would be easier to install.

Do you know why the engine blew? 99’s were known for oil-coolant intermixes. That means either a cracked head or cylinder let them mix. The repair issues get much larger if that is the case. The ‘sludge’ is next to impossible to clean and all coolant lines need to be replaced. You may be able to salvage the rads if you’re lucky. I bought a 99 as well, same condition. Thought engine only due to IMS but it was an intermix. Open up a coolant line and see what you have. Good luck.

3.6L Variocam in a '99? Not an easy proposition due to the fact that the 3.6s were driven by the 7.8 version of the Motronic DME.

It's easier if you start with a 3.4L E-gas car, which used the 7.2 Motronic so at least the connectors physically mate with the 7.8 DME. Then all that needs to be done is to move a very small number of wires in the DME connectors and add a couple of wires for the Variocam control back to the engine.

But in a '99, which wasn't E-gas, the connectors in the stock DME loom won't even mate with the 7.8 DME, so you're looking at a lot of hacking to make this work.

Regarding cleaning an oil-fouled 996 cooling system, it's messy but pretty easily done with enough flushing using a mix of liquid laundry detergent and hot water. Avoid any foaming soaps or degreasers as they are not nearly as effective as a non-foaming detergent.

Can you please back that up with some facts.

Its the only car I’m interested in.

Now I hear the turbo version is reliable, but not the different engine type
