Cooling system question

2002 996: Temperature is stable at just a tick over 180 F. It is always at this temperature after about 9 miles and just stays there. This is good. However, I had been getting warnings that coolant was low. I added a mix of the prescribed coolant with distilled water in to the reservoir. The warning went away. However after driving I notice a considerable amount of coolant leaking on the ground at the left rear corner of the car. The reservoir is now empty. However the warning doesn't come on and I have driving the car twice for distances just long enough for it to warm properly and the temperature is stable and the warnings don't come on. I do smell coolant when I park the car. I suspect a problem with just the reservoir or lines connecting it. Is there a good way to confirm? Pressure test? I wondered about the water pump but after the second time driving the car and the temperature remained stable and I saw no more leaking I think that this is unlikely. Any insights are appreciated.

Check the cap?

Look around the lip of the reservoir and see if there is liquid in the low spots on top of the tank. My cap gave way a few weeks ago and I am still trying to make sure all is good. My cap was the .01 model, but the .04 is the newest.
It could be more, but the cap is a good first check.

Thank you Jack. I'll look at that.
