Burning Smell

I have a 2008 997.1 4S. It's my DD and I drive 104 miles per day for work. When I get home from work and pull in the garage, there is always a slight burning smell. Well, today I was driving home and stopped, turned off the PSM and wanted to see if I could leave some black marks on the pavement and get a quick rush of 0-60!!

When I finally leveled out and got back within the speed limit, the smell of burned rubber was THICK in the car. I never heard a squeal or a saw a black mark. But DAMN the smell. It was still thick 6 miles later when I got home and I rode with the windows down. Any idea what was causing the smell?

Thanks Pelicans!

The rear tires are right next to the exhaust pipes. You’re smelling hot rubber. It’s common, especially given how tight everything is packed in back there.

Thank you! That is what I expected, but wanted verification!

Not so sure it's normal for a car that had an original list price of $80k!! If you're smelling rubber then you might have a hose contacting the engine or exhaust. I think you want to look and see. Wouldn't want to have a coolant hose burn through and leak out your coolant. Overheating can crack the head and now you're in for some major engine work. Get it looked at by a proper shop that services Porsche and don't be cheap about it. These cars can be expensive to fix when small items are neglected.

Also look at the serpentine belt for glazing
If you are having a pulley starting to go bad it can “skid” on the belt

Ended up being the belt slipping as a couple of pulleys were not rolling as they should. Got the pulleys and belt replaced, no more burning smell!
