Looking for a modern 911 - 997.1/997.2 or 991?

Hi Guys,

I am aware of the advantages of 997.2 (direct inject/IMS solved) and will probably pay up for one but.....the earlier cars are far more affordable and can be bought with low mileage.

I plan on driving the snot out of it, it won't be an investment car, I have several questions:

1. Is there a more advantageous year after the 2005 where the IMS repair is feasible
or indeed possible?
2. Base Carrera or S?
3. Are there maintenance issues with PASM or should I look for it?
4. Problem areas to look for, rust, power steering rack, rear main seal leaks?
5. Expensive gotcha's?

I've been on Pelican air cooled forums for years and owned 4 air cooled cars , this would be my first foray into the H2O....

My current car is an '84 Carrera wide body M491

I love opinions and a good discussion, If 997.2 is the same or more than a 991 should I consider that?

I am a weekend wrench warrior and do my own light maintenance.

Thanks!

Scott (S. Florida)
