ticking sound from right bank

'06 C4 26,000 miles
When running, there is a ticking sound coming from the passenger side cylinder bank. Ideas?
Thanks,
Adam

That’s where the dreaded bore scoring starts, cylinders 5&6

I had much the same symptom on my '02 Targa, and went through a long list of hypotheses with my indy... The car would run fine until it got hot, then you'd hear the ticking sound like it had a stuck lifter. Eventually I started to get the occasional misfire on cylinder 3 and a check engine light which would self-clear on the next start. Changed oil, tried an additive to clean the lifters, compression and leakdown tests were fine, thought it might be a coil pack, swapped those around, but the problem didn't go away. Finally my Indy (Rob King - S Car Go Motors in San Rafael, CA - great guys, BTW) looked inside the cylinder with a bore scope. It turned out to be a cracked exhaust valve seat that would lift up out of the head a little bit as the valve rose, then be pulled down into the seat by the descending valve.

This was not an inexpensive fix, but I'm relating the story not because it was a nightmare, but instead because it was so unexpected. After running through the entire litany of usual suspects I feel very fortunate that the seat didn't come out all the way and drop onto the valve stem, getting caught between the valve and the head before being resoundingly smacked by the piston.

Now all is back to healthy...

Good luck-

Drew
