Sun visor Lid Repair

I’ll admit that this is pretty basic, BUT IT WAS DRIVING THE LIVING $#!+ OUT OF ME.

I recently acquired a 996 for my wife, I’ve got the ‘75 3.0 Targa. As expected, both sun visor lids were broken.

Our host does have a solution to my problem.

https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/9967319030101C.htm?pn=996-731-903-01-01C-OEM&SVSVSI=900&fs=0

I decided to see what I could do at home . . . using a 3D printer I made some new lids.

The 3D printed lid had the right proportions, but I couldn’t install the damn thing.

PLAN B

I decided to see what I could do in terms of creating a repair on the broken lid. I had seen a video on YouTube and watched a guy put screws through both ends of the visor and created the hinge that way. He then use magnets to keep the lid in place when it was down and did not want the sun visor lid open. By retaining one of the original hinges I had the advantage of keeping one of the originally designed hinge stops. Thereby eliminating the need for magnets.

I decided what I would do was create a new receptacle on the broken hinge side where I would glue a small plastic cylinder to the visor lid and then be able to use that as a point in which to have a complete hinge.

First I got a razor blade and cut off the broken hinge attachment area. I made it flat and smooth. I also cut 3 mm of the fabric on the inside if the visor (from hinge to hinge) to permit exposed plastic to glue to the plastic tube I planned on using as the hinge.

I experimented with several different pieces of plastic that I could use as the hinge, and I determined the longer the hinge the better, because it would have more surface area to be glued onto and be stronger. I ended up cutting a piece out of an ink pen.

I then took a small drill and drilled a hole at the area on the sunvisor lid where the hinge point was on the sunvisor. In order to do this I removed the sunvisor out of the vehicle. Though it could be done while still in the car, the thought of sharp things around my leather interior made me nervous so I did it on a workbench.

Once the epoxy was dry, I then replaced the sun visor lid, and inserted a small cotter pin to keep it in place.

The next thing to do was replace the repaired sunvisor.

I may buy the black stickers on eBay to cover up the scratched AirBag warning sticker.

Oh hell, knowing me I’ll either end up buying a pair of clean used sun visors or get the replacement mirror assemblies from our host.

It was a fun Tuesday project.

Any other updated on the sun visor cover replacement?
It seems to get press on other sites as well.
Host will sell an entire unit but do not think all colors are available.
Salvage house will sell the entire unit for $300, hard to put that up for a 50 cent cover...
I cannot find any other options at this point.

There seem to be several new replacement sunvisor lids on eBay which look pretty good. I cannot attest to their quality.
