996 driver's window not clearing the door gasket

Hi all, fairly new member here, with an '02 996 Carrera coupe. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the inside door handle suddenly got floppy, which suggested to me that a spring had broken. After removing the door panel, sure enough, the spring that keeps the inside door handle pulled in had failed.

As soon as the spring arrives, I'll install itand that problem should go away.

My real question is that I've noticed that my window doesn't clear the door gasket. The window does go down a bit when you open the door from inside. Could this problem be related to the failed inside door handle return spring? The problem existed before the spring actually broke, and I'm thinking that the spring had lost some of its tension, so the switch that lowers the window slightly might not have been fully depressed.

Any thoughts?

There is a microswitch on the handle that tells the window to go down. Its bad or not contacting correctly.

In my old Boxster the windows worked fine but the driver door would not “drop” when opening the door. The micro switch was the problem.

I don’t know if a failing micro switch would result in partial retraction of the window.

Thanks for the replies! I think the microswitch is working, as the window will go up and down the fraction of an inch it's supposed to. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that when I get the new spring in place and the door buttoned up, all will be well.

The cable that activates the window to go up and down can stretch . While you have the door card off follow the cable visually . If you see play or a space at the end you can take a zip tie and use it as a spacer . You can do a Google search and find out how to do this . Very common on driver's side as it is used the most . Some guys use bicycle adjustable cable ends like that used on bike brakes . Yours is obviously working as it is dropping some just not enough . Classic cable stretch .

Just to wind things up, the new spring that holds the inside door handle closed is installed, and the door is back together. That seems to have fixed the problem with the window not clearing the door gasket.

Thanks to all who replied...

Sorry, no, I didn't take any pictures. It seemed simple enough that I didn't feel the need to document it.

BTW, I like your "other ride." Very cool to drive one of those big cargo planes!
