Has the IMS been replaced? The timing chains run off the intermediate shaft and that may affect it.

I'm not saying it IS that, but it could contribute if there is play in the bearing, the chains will have play.
That aside for a minute, you should study the LN Engineering site. The 2001 model year had a higher than average failure rate for the IMS. The 3.4 engine from 99-01 also were very susceptible to oil/coolant intermix from overheating and cracking cylinders or heads. I acquired a 99 with the same engine as yours with an intermix from a cracked head. After finding a new engine and installing the IMS, I added a 3rd radiator for cooling system capacity and never looked back. Take whatever preventative measures you can before the engine replacement or rebuild costs more than the purchase price of the car. I saw another thread that talked about the 996 increase in value, so preserve your investment.

there are numerous sensors involved in the cold start process that control air and fuel enrichment as well as high idle. You'll need to start there... with the proper equip.
