Electronic dash display failure

Our 07 Turbo has had a failure of the LED dash display. It started with a little yellow squiggle down at the bottom of the central display, but it grew to the point of obscuring things. Interestingly, the factory manual shows this squiggle, but just says something like failure of display.

The local dealer knew about this (though not what caused it), removed the instrument unit, took it to a local non-Porsche place, and within hours called and said it was repaired and heading back to the shop.

Why should a solid state device like this have a progressive failure of this sort? Are individual led's in whatever matrix they are embedded in failing? It appears this is even more common on Audis, per the dealer.

Anyone had this happen? Know why?

LCD failures happen it is not uncommon . Age/heat cycles/ignition cycles all add to the failures .

Add vibration to the list and latent defects introduced during manufacturing and it’s surprising they don’t go out more often.
Glad it’s fixed. Hopefully not too expensive.

Well, way way cheaper than a replacement unit, if Porsche still has those in stock.

Plus, I expect the availability of a local non-Porsche shop to do this particular repair may be quite limited? On the other hand, the whole dash unit is not heavy, so shipping would just add down time. A DIY guy might figure out how to remove the unit, as it didn't take the dealer long, and didn't seem to involve removal of other dash parts. My wife would not allow me to mess around with it! I suspect it was held in with some clips, which were disengaged by some spatula-like tool, similar to how trim is removed?

Yeah, I understand the “wife won’t let me” thing. But that’s usually a house thing.
