997.2 -- Can I change the oil filter without draining the oil?

About a week ago I changed the oil in my '09 C2S. I intended to change the filter at the same time, but discovered that I had the wrong filters, the paper filters that are used on 996 models.

On the 997s the filter is on top of the engine in a plastic container. Can I take the top off this container without spilling oil all over the top of the engine?

Yes. You can change the filter without making a mess, although placing some paper towels strategically is helpful as this video shows:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8RV4qRHJVg
