IMS upgrade vs engine replacement

I own a 2002 996 carrera 4 cabriolet. Trying to get some details on cost of IMS upgrade vs cost of completely replacing the engine. Appreciate any thoughts.

I thought this would be simple to answer and then I thought better of it. Is this an academic question or do you have a car that clearly needs at least one or the other? More info of your situation please.

Generally one of the replacement bearings, there are a few different types, plus labor will cost ~$1.5 to $5k depending on who and what else.

A replacement engine $5k ( for well used) to $30k for reputable builder.

Thank you for responding. My car is in great shape and has had IMS service already. Just curious about engine replacement. I was asking "acedemically" for future reference. I appreciate the feedback from all.
