Fuel stabilizer
Hi,
I own a 2000 996. It is kept in an unheated garage. I only use Sunoco high test (93 octane ) gas. I do not drive it in the winter months so it sits for periods of time. I try and start it at least once a week and bring it up to temperature. This doesn’t take a lot of fuel. I have a full tank of gas. My question is this. Is it necessary to use a fuel stabilizer? If it is what is the best kind to use? Thank you for any information from anyone that has a opinion or recommendations Tim |

Does that Sunoco 93 have ethanol in it ? If yes I would recommend using a fuel stabilizer . When you say you start it and let it warm up does that mean it sits there at idle for 10-15 minutes ? That's one of the worst things you can do . Either drive it or don't start it until spring . Just my opinion .

Agree, only option is to drive car and bring up to operating temp. Idle for 10-15 minutes is bad news!!!!!

Yes you should use fuel stabilizer if the fuel sits for more than a couple of months.

Why exactly is it that idling for 15 minutes is bad?

Because it is nowhere near long enough for the oil to heat up to operating temperature so that the AOS system can boil off the water that has accumulated in the oil during cold start. If that water is not removed, it will slowly create acid formations that can and will attack multiple surfaces inside the engine.
Unless you are going to drive the car for 25-30 min at highway speeds, do not start it, you would be creating the opportunity for problems.............

Even though you use high-quality 93 octane gas and keep the tank full, gasoline begins to degrade relatively quickly, usually within 3 to 6 months.
