Does spring tensioner die often?

When I replaced the front seals and belts, the spring tensioner did not seem to tension the cam belt enough. As a result I had force it further left to get enough tension.

Do these spring tensioners fail often?

I was using the Kriket tool though, but I heard a lot of good words about the tool so I'm not suspicious of it.......maybe I should?

The autotensioners on the 87+ cars are absolute crap. I'd delete and replace with a pulley any day.

you would seriously remove the tensioner for the older setup? have you done this on your cars?

I have not needed to (my cars are all pre-'87) but if I ever got an '87+ 944 or transplanted in a '87+ engine I'd absolutely change to the older style pulley and delete that autotensioner. Absolutely and without question. I despise those things that much. Try working on one and you'll see what I mean. They turn a 10-minute job into a 3-hour job when doing belts.

Most guys I know with 'em end up cutting the old belts off simply 'cause they can't get the g-damned tensioner to release properly. Stupid design, IMO.

O-Phile, you still haven't answered my question: Is it just a bolt on/off job to return to using ecentric roller??

I believe so, but I've not done it. I've heard of it being done though, so I'm sure it's possible - just don't know how much work is involved.

All you have to do to use the earlier tensioner is take out the big bolt holding on the water pump and replace it with the stud that the tensioner rides on and get rid of the '87 up spring piece of crap.
