Funny Clicking
Well to all that know my 951 is coming along quite nicely and I have been really impressed with her progress. Spoke with John at Vitesse and have my name firmly planted on a turbo, MAF, and a few other Vitesse goodies.
I drove the car the last couple of days and I noticed a funny clicking sound coming from the drivers rear tire area. The clicking is getting noticable louder over the last 2 or 3 days of driving it.....Anyone got any off the top of the head idea's of what would cause this? It almost sounds like a CV joint is bad or going bad. Is the clicking normal when a CV joint is going out on a 951? I know this is true if it was a Honda or some FWD car....the clicking sound is similar to the sound a FWD makes.... Thanks, Steve |

the CV joints will sound like that. also, it could be the bearings back there.

No, it did not fall off but here is how it happened and how I noticed. I was at a DE at Road Atlanta at the beginning of October with BMWCCA. I drive to the events and put on R compound tires at the track. As I was changing back to street tires to drive home, I got to jabbering with some fellows who where paddocked next to me. I was distracted and did not torque the front left wheel. It was only hand tightened.
So I drove home with no problem. Next day I was driving the car around the neighborhood and came to a stop sign with windows down and heard a clicking souund as the car slowed. I also heard it when I turned into the basement garage. I figured a wheel bearing or CV joint was going south. I have a slight hearing impairment and sometimes determining which end of the car a noise comes from is a challenge for me. Too much trap shooting years ago......Lo and behold, the front left wheel was loose. All 5 nuts were there but the wheel could be wobbled. Moral of the story - pay the hell attention to what you are doing.

excellent story! my buddy had a wheel fall off of his jeep on a mountain road once. he tightened the nuts, but didn't stop and retighten them after a mile or so, which he was told was necessary with those particular mags. as he tells it, the ride became really exciting for a few moments.
