Tps...

Hi Guys!

How important is the TPS in the 951? I got one that keeps burning out. Tired of replacing it. Expensive...

Car seems to run fine without it otherwise. Part number is 951 606 113 00.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Sprint.

TPS lets computer know throttle is closed. The computer then does not fire the injectors until the engine speed falls below 1500 rpm or so. It'll cause lower fuel mileage. This is not its only function. I'm surprised your car idles properly without it.

It probably idles fine.... but a little high... 1000-1100 to keep it from stalling since the dme does not see the idle switch.

The dme will use part throttle maps with the TPS disconnected. So it will run fine......... but it will also not use WOT maps in this manner.

Its a great way to get you home....... but not for running it indefinitely.....

Ah... It idles at about 700-800! Or it's not broke like I think? How should I check if it's working right?

Thanks!

Do a search on Pelican. Someone once posted resistances at throttle positions........if memory serves.

How are the seals on your throttle body? If they are bad, they may be leaking oil into the TPS and causing it to fail. Do you have a liberal amount of oil in your IC pipes and throttle body?

A shorting TPS is caused by it getting too much juice. I don't have an electrical diagram so I do not know what else is on that current, but you may be causing more damage to things other than the TPS.

I would strongly suggest trying to find out why it is burning out rather than meerly removing it.

i generally prefer to troubleshoot something to make sure it's defective before replacing it, as i am against blindly swapping out parts to see if the problem is 'fixed'.

however, the tps is one of the few components that is easiest to simply replace rather than 'troubleshoot' to try to determine if it's working correctly.

the cycle valve is another such component.

save yourself the headache, just replace it with a known good one.
