951 Oil Coolers
I am currently building a tuned 951 engine to transplant into my 1983 944, and am perplexed on the topic of oil coolers.
My original thread is on the 944 forum here http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=291915

External cooler removes heat from the oil directly rather than depositing it in the coolant to be removed at the radiator. There is a thermostat somewhere in the 951 system that does not permit oil to flow to the external cooler until it reaches a threshold temperature.
If you are planning to track your car, I would suggest increasing your oil cooling capacity. I do not think the factory oil to air cooler is sufficient for tracking in hot weather. I use two coolers in series. A friend of mine who club races his 951 says a Mazda turbo generation 2 oil cooler can be fitted to the cars without much trouble. I did not go that route but, instead, installed a second one in series with the factory one. No more coolant temperatures creeping up in hot weather and no more oil pressure drop off on hot track days.

Thank you for the response, Lawrence. I will look into the options.

I might have a line on getting the 951 external coolers for cheap. What would I need to mount them, in terms of a housing and gaskets?

The one I purchased was a kit specifically for this car so it contained all the lines, correct fittings, and hardware. It is mounted behind where the driver side fog lamp was. You can still use the fog lamp but it blocks the air flow. I reinstall it in the winter. Trying to recall the name of the kit.

Well, I am going to have to get creative with airflow anyhow; I am dropping this 951 engine into my 944NA's bodywork. I do have awhile to think about it, though...

Wow, that is quite a project. Don't forget to install a heat shield between the turbo and the brake reservoir. Friend of mine did not do that and melted the reservoir.

You need the oil filter housing off the 951. It has a in and out for an external cooler. The 951 cooler should mount right up at the bottom of the passenger side of the radiator.

Check on cchypers engine build post, it has pictures of how he mounted the oil cooler on his N/A using the 951 console and an after market cooler.
