anyone from the GTA and Southern Ontario....

hey guys, talking with Dan over in the classifieds section about bringing a doner 944 up from cali..

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=309739

anyone wanna pitch in to bring this thing up? after we get those interested parties, we'll discuss who wants what...

also, anyone who has any information about bringing a doner car into canada from the states would be appreciated. remember, this car isn't going to be registered... it'll be (most likely) scrapped.

Hey Kyle, that's a great idea. I might get in on this. I need to replace the clutch in my 83, and depending on cost, I might replace the seats. Mine are shot, totally ratty, but I don't want to spend more than a couple hundred bucks at most on seats.

Importing a car that is NOT going to be registered to be driven (i.e. parts car) is definitely easier, because you don't need insurance, trip permits, etc. and you don't have to pay PST, which saves a bundle. Plus, you may as well ship in on an open trailer, which is significantly cheaper than an enclosed trailer.

Have you seen my "dissertation" on importing? Some good info there:

hey christien, i have seen it... read it and found it quite interesting. Not sure how much of that applies to us though if it's not drivable.

got a quote from www.lhf.com . Here's what they say:

Quote:
Rate is in Canadian Funds and is a door to door quote. This price applies on an open car carrier not enclosed and does not include any Customs Fees Duty or Tax that might be applicable on your vehicle. Minimum road clearance required is 4 inches. Vehicle must be in FULL running/operating road worthy and safe condition. We do NOT handle “Salvage” or “Parts” vehicle/s. Nothing may be shipped in the vehicle. For cross-border paperwork please visit our website www.lhf.com
They want $2850... but $1600 of that is a pickup cost. We cant go with this carrier because the car isn't drivable though. I'll keep looking for quotes.

Well, I'm not sure interesting is the best description!

True, much of it won't apply, but if it's even close to a complete car with a VIN, the border will still treat it like a vehicle import, thus requiring the paperwork 3 days in advance, proof of clear title, bill of sale, etc. Even if the car's not running, it's still a car.

But it does make me wonder where the line is drawn as to what constitutes a complete vehicle, as opposed to a pile of parts. My guess would be a chassis, as that's what carries the VIN, but I don't know.

my last post was edited...

I'll get on my investigative hat. If you still have some contact information from your import, maybe you can give someone a call and ask where the line is drawn...

Hah! Yeah, right. I've done 3 imports - 2 I picked up, and 1 I used a shipping company, and they were one of the worst groups of people I've ever dealt with. Even if I could tolerate talking to them again, I'm sure they wouldn't know the answer.

AFAIK, most vehicle shipping companies have the "running" restriction, because they use drive-on trailers only, therefore the car needs to be driven on. For a parts car, you'd probably be looking more at a non-vehicle shipping company, like Fedex Ground or something. I'm just guessing here, though.

Best bet is to call CBSA or RIV. I haven't got time now, but if I get a chance later I will and post what I learn.

Got in touch VIA their web chat to a clerk at Showroom Transports. Here's our chat log.

remember guys, we dont need to purchase from CA... this is just to give us an idea on pricing.

Quote:
Stephanie: Welcome to Showroom Transports live chat. How may I help you today?

Kyle: hi stephanie.. i was wondering if you could ship from a city in the US to a city in Canada..

Stephanie: We ship to the border of canada

Kyle: would it be shipped to the closest border as the car? or could i select what point at the border it gets sent to?

Stephanie: you can pick any delivery city and state

Kyle: perfect. does the car need to be in running condition? This car rolls, but doesn't run.

Stephanie: we can transport an in operable, does it also steer and break?

Kyle: everything is functional, but the engine is inoperative.

Stephanie: no problem. What city state is it in?

Kyle: the car is in Menlo Park, CA, and i'd like it to go to Buffalo.

Stephanie: alright. What is the make and model of the car?

Kyle: it's a 1984 porsche 944

Stephanie: When do you need it transported?

Kyle: i'm not in any real hurry. I'm just looking for an estimate... probably in the next month or so.

Stephanie: alright. I will give you the quote for our standard service, you tell us when it's ready, we guarantee pickup within 7 business days

Kyle: ok... does your quote change with the weather? such as, would it be increased as snow starts to fall?

Stephanie: I will be right back. No, we factor in things like gas but not the weather

Kyle: alright... i'll be here

Stephanie: Sorry for the wait,

Kyle: not a problem..

Stephanie: We can do that for $1775 fully insured with the guaranteed pickup within 7 business days

Kyle: is that inclusive of all taxes?

Stephanie: Yes sir

Kyle: great. would it be much of a difference if it was shipped to detroit instead of buffalo?

Stephanie: One moment please

Kyle: sure

Stephanie: That would be $1475

Kyle: fantastic... and is that an open or closed trailer?

Stephanie: that is on an open carrier

Kyle: great. are there any other cheaper forms of transportation? or is that pretty much your base package?

Stephanie: That is our base price

Kyle: great. thanks stephanie, you've been a great help to me.

Stephanie: thank you

hmmm well for $1975 + duty and other crap Customs might slap us with, we might be able to find something in the same condition around here, I got my 944 for $1500 and it was 20 mins away from my home.

that's what i was thinking.. only thing i was thinking of is the rust... cali cars typically show less rust than our snow/salt slaughtered cars up here..
that said, you're right... we may be able to find a decent example for 1500 or so... i'll look around.

so far the interested parties are..

me, obviously.
dan
christian
bob
dave

I wonder if hpaulb would be interested. He has a 924S, but he may want something from the car too..

dan, chances of me putting up my car as the one to be butchered are slim to none, but hopefully what we're trying to do here works out...
