Auto 944 1988

I am trying to get the lights to work in the instrument panel. Also it will start in gear.

It looks like I have stuff missing. I will have to construct a new handle and sharft from a trans am. (I have not been able to find OEM handle)

Does anyone have info on these blocks and what volts I should have there?

The small blue wire on the larger block w/brown has 12v (key on) this plug connects to the tab center top of block. all other wires 0 v. The handle has two tabs that complete the circuits.

I believe that's the neutral saftey switch for the starter, but don't quote me on that

Yes, I think that's the neutral safety switch. Is the block adjustable side-to-side? Perhaps a clean of the contacts and a reinstall might cure the starting in gear problem. My wife's 924 is an auto, and the setup is very similar. You'll have contacts for backup lights there as well, so you should get voltage when you put the car in reverse, too. Sorry - not too much help. Have you tried the wiring diagrams here on Pelican?

The smaller sw below, I think it is the indicator sw, it must be broken. Does anyone know the part # for that. I have a PET program and I can't find it.

Also the top sw has volts on the one wire, is that right?

Yes, that's the neutral safety switch, and I'm 99% sure (going from memory here) that the 924 2.0L auto setup is the same as the 924S 2.5L auto setup. It is adjustable front-to-rear. Sorry, my car's at the other office or I'd get back to you w/ voltages.

But I'll check wire connections when I get a chance, confirm wire hookup. You could just have wires misconnected. I don't see the light fixture - just clips onto the side of the shifter mechanism.

The small long block on the bottom is the switch that activates the lights on the dash. It is missing (at least I don't see it) a little slider bar that sticks out the side with a small hole in it. There is suppose to be a small wire (paper clip looking thing) that attaches to the shifter and as the shifter moves back and forth it pulls and pushes the slider on the switch to light the different lights. I have never worked on my neutral safety switch so sorry I can't help with that. I f you want to put it back original, I can help you find some parts, shouldn't be too hard to find all that.

Yes I am very interested in restoring it to what it was supposed to be.
Little things like these indicator lights just bug me until its fixed. I have come a long way on restoring this car. Working on the interior now.


It looks like I need the entire sw assembly for the indicator lights, and if you can help get me a # for it or point me were to find it, that would be great. I searched pelican by name but I have yet to find it.

The slide switch for the gear indicator lights on the dash is below the neutral safety switch (long skinny bar with notches). It appears that you are missing the lever from the switch to which the wire connects to the shift lever is missing (rectangle bar with a hole in the end). This then connects to the knob under the shilt lever with the groove in it (Horizontal pointing toward driver). The switch itself connects to the wire connector in front of the shift lever. Here is the wiring for my 88 NA Auto: Green for park, ge/gn for Rev, ye for neutral, bk for drive, wt for second, re for first. Hope this helps.

I can't find the switch number for the gear indicator either. Call Pelican directly and they will come up with it for you.

Kudos on the paint - looks good! I'd like to teach myself how to paint sometime. I love my 944 but I get bored of the color.
