Is an 83' 944 engine a free turning engine?
Hello,
I just purchased a 1983 Porsche 944 5 speed. I need to get better fuel economy, and this is it. I have a 79' 928, and an 86' 928, but I really love this little 4 cyclinder bugger  My question is this 83' 944 engine a free turning engine? The timing belt has about 17k on it? Your 944 is NOT free turning. If the belt goes bang, so do your valves, maybe pistons, and anything else that lets go. Sorry to bear bad news, but with normal maintenance they are not a problem. 17k is probably ok, but I'd get belts changed anyway.

Most of us do a 2 year or 30,000 mile schedule. Waterpump every other time.

What they said.
944 & 924S have interferance engines. The early (Audi-powered) 924s had non-interferance engines (one advantage, I suppose). All later variants (944S, 944S2, 968) are also interferance design.
