How much Horsepower??

How much horsepower, stock, did the 944 have?
Oh, just check the technical articles.... right?

Well, here on PP, one article lists 150hp for a particular year. Another lists 147 for the same year. And the Porsche website lists 160 for the same year.

Does anyone know?

I believe it depends on the year and what area of world it was made for. Emissions and Higher Euro CR Pistons were a few of the factors.

143hp for the early model 944s.. thats '83 - '85... 9.5:1 compression

147hp from '85.5-87 due to slightly higher compression, 9.7:1

I think the '88 had about 150hp due to even more compression.. 10.2:1 .

160-163hp rating is for the euro spec cars which always had the higher compression and no emissions.

The '89 2.7 had 163hp.

Everyone has there own opinion on what they had.

actually, it goes something like this
83-86 944 9.5:1 M44/01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06
87 944 and 924S 9.7:1 M44/07
88 944 and 924S 10.2:1 M44/08

I could see a difference if I was talking about different years, but let's take one specific year... 1985.

This pelican page lists the following:

83 - 86 = 150@5500
87 - 88 = 158@5900

While this other Pelican page lists the 1985.5 as 143 hp@5500 RPM.

Finally, the Porsche site lists the 1985 as 150@5800.

All the same year, no agreement. And a discrepancy between two document right here on PP.

Well the automatic is a real slushbox, that transmission though very smooth is just plain terrible. I dont know what Porsche was thinking when they put in a 3-speed automatic with no overdrive. I lived with it on my 924S for 2 years before i got sick of it and sold it!

the porsche website is the euro model...
the two pelican articles are written by members just like you and me. I dont think i would quibble over 7hp. there's always a percentage error in measurements.

The Porsche site lists the HP as 163 / 150 with cat. Did the euro cars have a cat option??? Or, since the US cars definately ran a cat, is the 150hp the US spec as I thought?

I'm sure if you took 10 cars right off the production line and dyno tested them, you would find a difference - probably even more than 7 hp. I don't care about measurements.

When the car was produced, there was a specification.
I just wanted to find out what that spec was.

And here is yet another source of info:

if you want the spec, follow the porsche website. If you want average (actual) results, follow everything else...

Individual motors(even in the same production run) can vary by as much as 2-3%, so there is no 'fixed' HP answer.

Dyno 10 different stock 944 motors and you'd get 10 diferent readings.

How it going Cash?
Hp would be 143-150hp at the crank. 2 years ago at 944fest there were a bunch of 8V 944 which dynoed (mine included) and they were putting out between 118hp - 125hp at the rear wheels.
