It's the easiest oil change you'll ever do. Here's a link to a technical article on this server about how to change the oil on a Boxster, which is essentially the same as the procedure for the 996.

Just a word of advice ahead of time. My oil filter canister was on pretty tight (bought a 1999 coupe used) on my first attempt to change the oil. None of the oil filter wrenches (shallow, cup-shaped things that fit over the end of the filter) that I tried from Autozone or Checker would budge it. They all slipped. Even tried stuffing one of the wrenches with paper, and tried with mastic (rubber) tape for a tighter fit and better grip. Finally had to break down and buy the factory tool.

Others have claimed success with aftermarket wrenches, but I was unable to find one specifically sized for the Porsche 996 filter cases. Had mine not been on so tight, one of the aftermarkets might have worked.

Other than that, it was a snap. One plug and one filter, like most other cars. You may want to buy a length of 2 x 6 wood, and cut into four pieces to drive upon to give you more clearance, instead of jacking up all four corners. I was able to change oil with the car on the ground, but next time I'll roll it up on the boards. Will be a lot easier.

Heck, I went out and sprung for a couple of ramps to back up onto.

And then jacked up the front? You'll need it level to get all of the old oil out.

The angle is actually quite low because my ramps are only about 6" high and while a few ounces may not have made it out of the sump, most of it certainly did.

I did think about that however. In the end, I decided that the few ounces that might not make it out of the sump wouldn't amount to much of a problem considering the total volume of the oil and the frequency with which I change it (every 5K miles).
