speedo question

According to my GPS, which seems to be accurate when compared to my Audi and Honda, the 996 digital speedometer reads about 2 mph optimistic (too fast). Could the PO have installed a set of tires with a smaller diameter? Is this adjustable in the ECU?

Second question. The PO must have sprayed armor all into the instrument cluster, some of which has stained the interior of the volt meter glass. If I remove the cluster, can I separate the gauge covers from the cluster without breaking anything?

Thanks

Stefan

My 996 speedo also reads exactly 2 miles an hour fast. I think it's built to err on the side of optimism by design. I remember reading something to that regard some time ago. My '87 is actually much more optimistic by around 10% according to GPS.

Can't help on your gauge problem.

Yes you can just be careful as the acrylic lens cover is brittle. Use only dish soap and water to clean it, no chemicals.....wipe with a tack cloth to avoid lint on the inside of the lens.

And watch for fingerprints. First time I did this on a customers car I had to take the cluter back out to wipe a small print on the inside of the lens.

I was able to remove the cluster, but could not figure out how to separate the bezel pieces holding the plexiglass in place. It seems you have to gently break it free - something I was not prepared to do. Any more wisom out there. Surely someone has replaced the gauge faces.

Thanks
Stefan
