60K Maintenance for 996 check list

Hello everyone,

I bought a 1999 Porsche Carerra 996 with 56K miles. There where no service records at all.

I did some reading and I put this list together. I also noticed minor oil drips after a lot of driving. the drip is about 8" in diameter. It doesn't drip after its use. What might be the problem? I am handy, so I could find my way around, but this is the first time I'm going to work on a Porsche... I've worked on other cars since I have been a teenager.

I got this parts list from this website:

Fuel Filter 996-110-253-01-M67 $31.75
Oil Filter & Seal Kit 996-107-225-53-M100 $19.00
Filter Drain Plug 900-219-009-30-M100 $4.00
Oil Drain Plug Seal 900-123-106-30-M131 $0.50
Oil Filter Tool 000-721-920-40-OEM $29.75
Airl Filter K&N 996-110-131-52-M318 $95.00
Serpentine Belt 996-102-151-66-M21 $23.75
Oil Spout PEL-PM883056 $7.50
Drain Pan PEL-PP801095 $15.00
Spark Plugs 999-170-207-91-M14 $63.50

Do I have to change the plug wires if they exist? Should I flush the radiator, what about Transmission?

I have a OBD2 diagnostic tool. Is this enough for this car to clear any trouble codes?

One more thing, I had the car in storage through the winter, I started it once a month for 15 minutes. The battery is not completely dead, but not enough juice to turn the engine. I am going to charge it with a 10 Amp charger for about 30 hours. Is there anything I need to be aware of after battery loses its power? How does that effect the systems in the 996. Will I need to reset any trouble codes? Can I do it with my OBD2 diagnostic tool?

solhja,

Hey thanks for the list! I too will be becoming a 996 owner, tomorrow to be exact. I'm sorta in the same boat you are. I've worked on my own cars for years! I'm a longtime BMW guy, most of the maintenance I do myself thanks to my Bentley repair manuals!

I put up a new post asking the folks here if there are any such manuals for the 996's! Folks here don't seem as friendly as the BMW forums I'm use to. No replies at all. Were can I get one of those code/reset tools?

Oh well, good luck!

Code Reset Tool

Any OBD 2 Scanner can reset basic codes, but you'll need the Porsche System Test 2. That tool is almost 10,000.00 dollars. I know BMW uses the same hardware, but you load the Porsche OS on it. Something in that nature, that is a cheaper way of getting it. The BMW version is green and Porsche I think is red.

You can also get the Durametric software and load it into your laptop and read/reset codes and check actual values.

Just to follow up on my first post with the failed battery. I put it on charge in the evening (Friday) with the hood open, the trunk light was on while charging, couldn't find the switch to turn it off. So I took a chance and left the trunk hood open while charging.

Saturday afternoon it started right up! The memory was not cleared and everything was normal. I used a 12V 6A charger.

I purchased from this website a Porsche battery maintainer. Which I'm going to keep plugged in. Through my experience, I recommend it.

Thanks, the new list is as modified

NOTE: I removed the K&N Filter because of complaints that it causes the CEL light to come on because the MAF goes bad and it costs $600.00 dollars to replace. I saved $600.00 for MAF replacement, and $95.00 dollars for the K&N filter... others complained that the Air Filter housing stays greasy after using the K&N filter. I'm not going to roll the dice on this one, so I'm sticking to stock paper filter.

Brake Fluid Flush...

Is there a easy way to get this done? Do I need two people to pump the petal? Are there tools to make this easier on me?

Does this need to be done every two years?

RE: every two years?

Brake fluid is hydrophilic (attracts/absorbs water). This is good because it keeps water from getting in the lines near the calipers and creating steam when you brake hard. (...creating a sudden loss of braking...)

The downside is that after a while, especially the fluid near the calipers, contains an increasing amount of water -- thus, it can cause corrosion in the calipers. Enough corrosion and you have to replace them.

If your brake system is in essentially good condition, then replacing the fluid every two years is seen as a Lot cheaper than replacing your calipers.
