replacing audio system in '99 911 w/CD
Looks like the audio system in the '99 Carrera fits into a standard-size sleeve in the dash. If I replace it I assume the CD trays won't be compatible with a non-OEM receiver - is that correct? If so, what do the non-CD's have in that part of the console/dash and can I replace the CDs with whatever that is?

No, the CD trays should be fine with a different radio.

Okay, now I've got the car! It's got the luggage-compartment mounted factory CD changer. Will this be compatible with any aftermarket replacement receivers?

hehehe
Dis ist keine probleme. The CDC-4 does not always work and play well with others. You will pretty much be limited to another Becker unit or a Blaupunkt with cd changer control

I did some research on this last fall. I contacted Kenwood and Pioneer. Both told me that their headunits were not compatible with my Porsche CD changer. I ultimately pulled the Porsche gear and put in Pioneer.

I think the changer is a CDC-3, but same prognosis as the CDC-4.
I'm thinking of replacing the CD changer with a Phatbox from Phatnoise. If I need a different cable between the head unit and the changer, is it hard to place the new cable? |

PhatNoise
I can't comment on the diffculty of routing the cable, but you will probably like the PhatNoise. I've used something similar for years. It's a real step forward to be able to access the content of hundreds of CD's in the car. No more "oh, that CD is at home", or "oops, that's in the other car". Every tune with you all the time. But it takes a couple weeks to rip the tracks off hundreds of CD's. But it's something you have to do only once. Be sure to have a backup tho. Be painful to rip them all over again.

Oh, I've had a Phatbox in my Passat for a couple of years. I know how great it is!
