2002 996 AC/Fan Problem
2002 Carrera 2 with 34K miles. AC worked great earlier this week, but now is kaput. Just bought car on Monday; so I have no prior experience with this particular vehicle.
Here's what happened: Was running AC, switched to defrost for a minute. Fan quit blowing and still will not blow under any circumstance. No messages available on the onboard computer. Not only will the fan not blow, but the A/C button will not even make the A/C indicator light come on. All other electronic indicators on the center console--"auto" button, temp +/-, fan speed +/-, vent selection, etc. work same as always. The fuse box map indicates three fuses related to A/C. I pulled and inspected those three. None appeared burned out, but I stuck replacements in nonetheless. Made no difference. Ideas? One curiosity...is the AC and fan one unit? If so, anyone have a ballpark on part/labor cost to replace? Upside is that open sunroof and two open windows can circulate lots of 100 degree Memphis air... |

It looks as though you've already done what I was going to suggest. I just visited the 'Dark side' too!

So is your problem resolved, or are you still figuring it out, too? If yours is solved, what did you have to do?

I'm having similar problems. What did you do to get it resolved?? It appears my blower moter stopped working. I can't find a fuse anywhere. Any idea? |

A lot of research in forums indicates a faulty ignition switch--it's attached to the back of where the key goes in. I've got one on order; so I'm not sure yet, but I found people with exactly the same symptoms as me and the switch was the deal.
There's a $35 part that is the genuine replacement, though some people question why you would replace a piece of crap with a piece of crap. It was so bad that Porsche no longer makes it available. Then there is the later-model $150 part which is a combination switch and steering column lock. Pelican Parts sells them both at a fair price. Labor on the first option is 30 min. est., the other is 2-3 hours. There's a pictoral how-to on renntech.org (sorry, I plugged Pelican above...I'm just being honest about renntech...but, hey, I came back here...) to do it. Better than paying a shop their rates. I won't have the part for a few more days, but I'll update the post when I'm done. |

Confirmed that new ignition switch solved the problem. Installation took about a half-hour; you have to go at it from under the dash, but it is a straightforward repair if you're willing to do it.
Nice to have AC and headlights again! |

Spoke too soon...
All the electronics are back, but the car won't start. Prelim diagnosis is that I should have bought the $150 upgrade. Will continue to educate as I learn more... |

OK, it turns out you simply have to hold the key in the '2' position for a couple of seconds and then the starter engages and everything is great. For those two seconds, though, the silence is freakish...you just feel like nothing is going to happen.
After a few starts like this, it's now back to normal 'instant start' almost every time. I did already buy the upgraded ignition switch just in case...but I haven't tried to install it yet since the thing actually runs again. |
