Just acquired a 2004 GT 3 with 11K miles...pristine. The brake discs look clean and smooth - however they make a rasping noise when applied which I would expect of the ceramics, except these are NOT.
Cause for concern, or do I just need to get them heated up? |

The only time I have driven a GT3 I'm afraid I wasn't paying too much attention to the sound the brakes made, but it must be unusual for you to mention it.
It probably isn't anything serious, but you don't really want to gamble with brakes. I'd check to see what sort of condition the pads are in. If they look OK I'd try bedding them in and see if the noise goes away. If it doesn't then I'd suggest getting them checked to ensure there are no serious problems, such as a cracked disc. It isn't something that I've heard of to be honest, anyone else care to chime in?

I would ask the previous owner if they made that particular noise and if you can't contact anyone I would inspect each disc with wheels off for debris and/or improper wear.
A lot of times people do not properly "bed" their brand new disc pads and end up with possibly warped discs or glossy pads. If nothing else, get those pads out and pop in a fresh set, check the disc surface with a flat edge and try again. Congrats on the GT3,,, but take ownership and get in there!

If you use it as intended you'll probably find they go quiet.
The disks are iron and rust easily and there are two sides - one you cant see, and front and back too. My Porsche 993 disks rusted badly on the inner face (half an inch track in the centre of the disk face). Caused by light use and not drying the disks off after washing the car. The problem when you use them properly - especially if you track it - is the disk will show cracking starting at the drilled holes. Then its time for Alcon front disks which last 5 times longer - with Pagid pads.
