A trouble code came up..#5 injector, can I replace this myself?? Replace the whole bank (3). How would you rate the difficulty?

What year, what country spec, what code number, how many miles? Too little info to say the injector is actually at fault.

Easy with engine out:

But more time consuming to get at with engine in.

With the 996, the left bank is easier to work with when the engine is still in. The right bank is a totally different animal. Best to have your wrench do the work unless you have small hands and a LOT, and I do mean A LOT of patience.

Thanks guys! The car runs reasonable well and the problem seems to be intermitten for now. Just to clarify, I have 99-996 cabriolet with 75,000 miles. Engine was replaced by Porsche under warranty @ 16,000 miles (in 2001). So the engine has 59,000 miles. With #5 on the right bank (the more difficult side) I will take a long look at the task at hand before diving in. Thanks again, Bob

The code (P1315) is more frequent along with a rough idle. The car is drivable and smooth through the gears under normal conditions. I also noticed the 1 exhaust tip is blacker, meaning a rich condition?? Anyhow the machine is going in to see Dr. Porsche today.

Up date: Dr. P scoped the engine out and came up with a bad #3 cylinder looking at a stuck valve / broken spring as the source of my problem. Compression and leak down were very poor...engine is out and re-working the head. Electrically the engine checked out (injectors, ignition coils, plugs, harness).

Final Update: Stuck valve turned into a burnt valve (part of the valve is actually missing...pizza wedge). They want $10g's to re-do the head or $13g's for a re-built factory engine (complete w/ warranty) (by the way this would be engine # 3). Depressed is an understatement.....thinking of just selling. 1st and last Porche. Good luck to the other 996's, your going to need it. Bob A

might try a p salvage yard, and a independent porsche shop to do the work...... that will most likely be the cheapest route. if you decide to keep it. if not PM me..

Cheapest may not be the best. It's entirely up to you, but a Porsche reman engine has a two year warranty and a used engine has only the warranty the seller offers.

If you are planning on keeping the car, replace the motor with a Porsche supplied one.
As it's a 99, you probably will need a clutch/flywheel (they don't come with the reman engine) and a coolant tank and update hoses.

Engine replacement is now complete. Car runs like new! Flywheel / clutch checked out. Install appears to be 1st class. Thanks for all your help. Bob A
