Tiptronic on a Turbo or Not
I am a purist, and have always liked shifting the traditional way.
I have been looking at used 2001/02 996 Turbos, but find that a lot of them have the tiptronic transmission. What are your thoughts? Would it be good to have tiptronic on the track? Can you swap the steering wheel for a 997 version (like it better)? instincts tell me to get a standard 6 speed. What would you guys do?

Go with your instincts. People who own Tips never actually use it. Because you don't have too.
I find automatics boring to drive.

The Porsche tip is a very good transmission. You stated that you are a purist so why are you considering a tip?

IMO the feeling of turbo boost is far more profound in an automatic car.

I've recently bought a 997 CS with tip - having always owned manual transmissions.
About 5-10% of the time, I wish I had a manual. The rest of the time, I'm happy with the tip. I don't do track days but still enjoy spirited driving - that's when I use the manual feature. Otherwise, it's relatively intuitive for the driving at the time. In hindsight, I'm glad I got the tiptronic... but then many 'purists' who laugh at the idea of a tip also commute in their sports cars. In traffic, it's a wonderful thing and it takes more than a gearbox 'type' to ruin a thoroughly enjoyable driving experience. |

I enjoy driving my wife's tip 996. When you're running around town and have 2 kids in the back, a tip is wonderful. This last weekend I was doing some spirited driving through a few canyons and in Manual mode it works great.

I like the Tip for my daily driver but would hate it for a weekend fun machine.

Good to hear lots of tips out there. Mine (NA) has had the tramsmission fluid changed couple of times and works very well. On the track it is very predictable and controlable
.Awesome ride manual too . Don't get me wrong. I want the best of both worlds, manual at track, automatic on street, and can't imagine not liking the tip.
