Tiptronnic tranny troubles. Please help us out!
So one night we are out cruising in my brothers car and the tranny went nuts on us. The car never gets abused. My bro is a fisherman and is at sea a majority of the time so it usually just sits there. So we are cruising in 4 at a relaxed pace (maybe 2k or so rpms) and out of the blue it felt like the car went in to neutral. It was definitely still in 4th gear though. So we pull over, check the car out and everything seems fine. 1st gear... 2nd gear... 3rd gear... no problems. As soon as you hit 4th, feels like neutral. It's almost like it is not engaging.
I have the car now while he is out fishing so I can find the problem. I am looking for a good tech or reasonable explanation at what might be wrong, and price to fix the problem. If you rev it in 4th (neutral) you can almost feel it grab but it just doesn't. I was told by a local non Porsche specific mechanic that each gear has a clutch pack. He said the clutch pack for 4th must be gone and would not quote me a repair price. Does this sound logical? Could it have been some kind of servo or sensor that went bad? 38k miles and already having major mechanical problems is not a good sign. Thanks in advance guys. thats the car if you wanted to see it.

Needs a Porsche experienced shop and technician and run on a Porsche PST2 or Piwis tester to find what is actually wrong.

You don't by any chance know where I can find a shop that has a PST2 in the New England area do you?

i agree with the mechanic that it sounds like a bad 4 gear clutch pack. the transmission needs to get rebuilt.
