Carrera 4 Brake fluid change
I have a 2001 Carrera 4 and want to change the brake fluid myself. The official Porsche Service manual says I need the Porsche Tester because of the PSM,ABS etc. Is that true or can I follow basic brake fluid replacement techniques?
Thanks for any help or tips. Last edited by Soundpilot; 02-03-2009 at 09:07 PM.. Reason: photo in wrong place |

I used the old school way and it was fine. I'm actually swaping my MC due to a brake upgrade and I'll need to use a tester to cycle the ABS at that point.

Thanks Aaron. Was it a Carrera 4? Just want to be sure before I start the job.

No it was a C2, but there is no "fundamental" difference in the brakes other than the pad/rotor/caliper size. The C2 also had PSM, so pretty identical to your C4.

Aaron, the C2 brake operation is totally different (apart from the calipers) to the C4.
The C2 brake operation is more like the 944 Turbo with vacuum booster and hydraulic pump ABS system. The C4 has hydraulic powered boost and ABS. You should buy the Adrian Streather's 964 book for info on these cars. Changing the brake fluid on the C4 includes the 4wd system actuators, ABS pump and accumulator and the clutch system. And they will need doing.

Why exactly would I buy a book about a 964 when I own a 996?

Mainly because I wasn't looking when I wrote a response .......no excuse, although it was a long day.
996 C2 and C4 are the same. It's a good book though...............

Carrera 4 brake fluid change
Aaron and Gerber,
I'm a little confused. Do I need the Porsche Tester to complete the brake fluid change for a 2001 C4 or can I follow standard brake fluid change practices? Thanks for your help. John |

A fluid change can be done by adding fluid, pumping and using the bleeders... the old school way. Or you can use a pressure type bleeder as per the manual, but it is not necessary. Only thing to remember is that the person putting pressure on the brakes should say "DOWN" before it hits the floor as over extending the pedal can cause issues with the ABS. This is not a Porsche thing, but something to be aware of on all ABS cars. Cheers Aaron |

True, though, the Streather 996 book is an excellent read, and a great reference, too.
