Intermediate shaft's bearing

Hallo to all,

I'm the owner of a porsche 996 carrera4 since 2000 year.

I'm experiencing troubles with the intermediate shaft's bearing.

I have to replace it with another but porsche doesn't sell it alone; instead I'm forced to buy all the intermediate shaft, that during years have been modified in such way that today I sould replace also the main shaft...in some words a lot of money just for a little bearing.

Anyone can help me, please?

Thanks a lot in advance

Assuming you are refering the Intermediate shaft housing at the flywheel end of the case, this is the part that leaks oil into the clutch housing.

The IMS housing/seal assembly was updated, Porsche sells it and most shops replace it when changing RMS as well as installing the updated case bolts.

You need the intermediate shaft housing 996 105 017 02 (up to engine number 661 14164) , updated case bolts 4 x 999 385 0004 01 (long) 3 x 900 385 275 09 (short), the tensioner crush washers, updated rear main seal (factory part only), eight flywheel bolts and six clutch pressure plate bolts.

If the clutch and flywheel require replacing, there are also updated release lever parts to be installed.

Thank you verry much,

I had a look...really interesting stuff.

LNengineering told to me that in a couple of months they will release the retrofit kit for double row bearings shaft, like mine, wich permits to change the bearing without disassembling the engine.

basically when the bearing needs to be replaced the valves will hit the pistons and the engine will stop. after that you will probably need to replace the engine. LNE sells a replacement bearing for around $600 check the site. Intermediate Shaft IMS Upgrade and Retrofit Kit for Porsche 911, Boxster, and Cayman models
Many folks replace good bearings to have peace of mind.

You can't tell if your bearing is starting to going bad without dropping the transmission and pulling the IMS flange. The cost for the bearing & flange is around $600. Labor will be another $1K, unless you do it yourself.
