2001 Twin Turbo Won't Start
I have a 2001 Twin Turbo 996 on my hands that just won't start. When I checked the diagnostic readout there were no fault codes for the DME and the most recent fault code in the Alarm module was "W-Lead (DME Immobilizer) Short to B+ Fault Code 23".
The procedure to check is apparently "Voltmeter at plug I alarm control module PIN 23 and ground. Switch Ignition On. Display: 0 Volt." So from this I assume I need to connect PIN 23 and ground out (to the chassis of the car perhaps?), turn on the ignition and if zero volts is displayed I have a defective Alarm module that must be replaced? If someone could shed some light on what needs to happen here I'd appreciate it. Also, is there a way to check whether power is being sent to the starter by checking the fuse panel or some other location that is more accessible than the starter motor itself? Thanks in advance J

I know this is stupid but did you try a new key yet? The only way to see if the starter is getting power is to go to the starter.
What happens when you try to start? Crank, No crank, key turn Will the key lock and unlock the car? Was the vehicle stored for a long period of time? |

I only have the one key at the moment. The key appears to be fully functional; i.e. unlocks and locks the car. The owner had it in for service at another shop after having it in storage over the winter. After the service they drove it around for several days without problems and then stopped for a gas fill up. After filling up, the car would no longer start.
When the key is turned to the start position there is a rumbling noise from the front (perhaps the fuel pump or brake booster turning on) and then all noises cease a few seconds later. There is no response at all from the starter with the clutch depressed. I used a diagnostic unit (Durametric) and connected it to the car. With the key in the on position I explored each available module. There were no faults in the DME module. I found the fault described above, along with others in the Alarm module. The battery has been pulled, given a full charge, and then returned to the car with no positive effect. I was hoping there was a fuse or relay I could test at as opposed to going to the starter itself as it seems rather inaccessible. I'm going to get back to that car tomorrow night and will attempt to follow Porsche's diagnosis instruction. However I don't have special tools 9616 and 9617 (these are the recommended test tools) so I'm not sure how successful I'll be. Any suggestions on other troubleshooting I might do will be appreciated. Thanks! J

You have fuel pressure? There is a test port by the coolant reservoir.
