Winter Tires
Does anyone have experience or a recommendation for winter driving tires for a 2001 996 with the 18 inch wheels? Chicago winters can get brutal and I was considering some all season performance tires vs. snow performance tires. Just wondering if there is a big difference between the two types of tires and what brand names are better than others in comparison.

Snow tires make a huge improvement and are worth it. My '02 does not get out of it's own way without them, but does great with them. I have the Dunlop 3D with 18" wheels and recommend them. They handle great and are actually quieter than my summer Pirelli tires.

All season tires are always a compromise, so most won't recommend them. Just buy an extra set of wheels (used) and mount some good winter tires on them. (I liked my Dunlop Wintersport M3s...great in snow but also decent when it's a little dryer.) Mount them just before first snowfall and remove them in Spring.
FYI 17" wheels should fit your 996. They'll look a little "weak" but will likely be cheaper to find used.

Thanks for the advice. Gonna start looking around now, before it gets cold.

I wound up with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus. They had the best on-line reviews for an all-season option, and the snow will be here soon. I am curious to put them to the test.
