Smoking exhaust

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm about to panic! I have a '99 996 C4.

Recently I had to add some less than desirable oil to my engine and put less than 100 miles on it. I parked it about a month ago and when starting the engine noticed it was now blowing white smoke and smells like crazy. Assuming it was the crap oil, I drained all the oil from the car yesterday and filled it up with Mobile 1. I started the engine back up assuming it would go away but it was just as bad. I haven't actually driven it yet, but had it idling for about 15 minutes in the driveway and it never went away. I also hear some clicking when at idle, which may have been there before, but I'm not sure.

So, what is this indicative of? I don't want to drive it if it makes something bad worse. But if it will go away after some time driving and recirculating the oil, then maybe I need to just do that. Help!

thanks,
Dustin

It could be the air-oil separator. There's a diaphragm inside that fails.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking now after doing some research. is it safe to drive to have repaired or do I need to tow it? I'm going to call my local porsche mechanic for a quote.

thanks,
Dustin

Be sure you have the correct oil level, sometimes the guage on the dash is wrong, always verify with dipstick, insure dipstick & tube are seated right etc. 1 quart low is OK anything past full is not

smoking

I have replaced more than one oil air seporators for smoking engines. When they go bad depending on how bad they are they will create so much vacume in the crankase they will lower the oil pressure, make the lifters clack and put on the oil light at idle. not an expensive part, maybe 2 two 3 ours labor. Good luck, Richie

Rich, dDoes AOS throw CEL or specific error codes? Is there a PN for the AOS?

Dustin, Oil change, then sit then, issue. Doesn't seem like it was the change w/o prior issue. Is exhaust clean?

Regrds,

you car has sat for a month. It's going to smoke. Oil passed the rings after sitting for 30 days. The clicking in the lifters from leaking down. Make sure the oil level is good and drive the car.
