996 possible purchase
I have the opportunity to buy a 2002 911 C4 cab with 36,000 for a very good price. I currently have a 84 911 with 100k. I can't keep both so getting the 02 would mean giving up the 84. I love driving the 84, I don't put very many miles on it, overall in great condition, no known problems except for some oil drips. The thought of the 02 sounds good, much newer, low mileage, more modern. My original thinking is that while I'll spend more to buy the newer car, I shouldn't have to worry about an engine rebuild for quite some time.
I started doing some research on the internet and found lots and lots of posts about engine problems. My question is in your opinion is this a real problem that effects most 996's or an isolated problem. I'm willing to take the normal risk of buying any used car. I'll have an inspection done prior to purchase. I'd love to hear some reasuring stories of miles and miles of happy driving. Thanks for your input. David |

There are stories out there of high mileage cars.. Macster has some 200K or so on his Boxster motor (the Boxster and 996 share the same M96 engine designations) so yes, it can be done. I imagine the interweb does a great part of exagerating the problems.. and remember that those who don't have issues are less likely to spread that good word!
The '02 and the '84 are worlds apart in Feel, Sound and looks. The new car is a great car.. but to me lacks the "character" of the aircooled cars. Something to consider that's all. I would test drive a bunch of the newer ones and decide which one (new vs old) would be more enjoyable on that nice weekend morning, or whenever it is you currently use the '84.
