2001 996 C4 Oil Seepage from Cam Housing Covers

Has anyone had the joys of repairing an oil leak from the cam housing covers on a 2001 996 C4? I am trying to get an estimate on what this repair might cost or if it might be something I can do myself. I love my Porsche but it is beginning to be the biggest money pit and things are breaking on it that all the Porsche dealerships and repair shops have never encountered or repair... just my luck. Any information on whether this is a common problem or your experience with this type of repair would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I recently purchased a 2000 C2 that a Porsche dealership did a PPI on. They located a left cam housing oil leak that needed repair. The dealership quoted $1300 to fix the leak. I took it to a local independent shop who quoted $1200 on what I described from the PPI. The local did the work and it ended up being a very minor seal leak around the spark plug wires which ran me about $225 to fix. Hope this helps you!

Cam cover leaks are not too common. More common are spark plug tubes leaking. Spark plug tubes are a very easy DIY. Cam cover leaking requires setting engine to TDC and locking with pin in front crank pulley. Possibly removing exhaust header (on cylinder 4-6 only). Removing cam end plugs on leaking head. Using a special tool (not to hard to make) to hold the cams from the end. Removing cam cover/clean/reseal.
